Let's take it back to KB Basics...
If you want to be good at any sport, you need to master the basics! Knowing inside and out fundamental drills and movements. Then put them into action by practicing the excercise. One your form is perfect than you are ready for reps. Make the connection between the physical and mental aspect when performing an excercise. Creating a mental checklist as you move your body seamlessly through an excercise will ensure that you are getting the most benefits. The more mind in your exercise the more your muscle fibers are firing and in turn the more benefits your body is receiving. So next time you are going through you workout, stop! think... know before you start how many rep's you are going to perform... as you work through the exercise think about what you are doing with your body as you perform the movement.
Some background info. and more...
My certification to teach Kettlebells stems from an organization called Dragondoor. Pavel Tsatsouline the mastermind behind the certification named Russian Kettlebell Challenge (RKC) earned a degree in sports science from the Physical Culture Institute and was nationally ranked in the Russian military/law enforcement applied sport of 'kettlebell lifting'. When I attended the certification I was blown away by the quality of instruction, and the people associated with the organization. So many professional's where in attendance, chiropractors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, and personal trainers. I met some really great people I have kept in contact with, one in particular Sara Cheatham.
On May 2-4 I get to go to Denmark and re-certify! Dragondoor requires that you re-cert. every 2 yrs. to ensure quality of certified instructors. I am really excited about going the 2nd time around, no doubt I will get even more out of the information this time. For the last 2 yrs. I have been bringin' it with Kettlebells to an area that has been invaded with learning the art of kettlebell training. It all started with a small group led by Keith Weber, RKC and owner of Weber Physiotherapy. From those small beginning over 3 yrs. ago I got hooked on the most amazing functional fitness tool that makes you leaner, stronger, & faster. I was never real gun ho about hitting the gym until I met the kettlebell. Kettlebell training offers you a fun workout that doesnt't require loads of you time. Within 20-30 min. you strengthen your body and joints at every angle.
The things taught at the RKC, and the skills learnt from my personal journey as well as my experience from teaching group classes, and personal sessions I bring to my workshops and classes. My focus is on technique, and building slow strength. Slow strength means building your training load gradually, using common sense, and listening to your body first and foremost. This way you train in a balanced way that does not force you into positions you are not ready for. My goal is to make each client proficient on there own, and train the SMART way.
S - Specific
M - Measurable
A - Attainable
R - Realistic
T - Time Based
Another important factor in a path towards peak health and wellness is tracking your progress and the ongoing process of goal setting. My way of doing this is by starting my day off with an 1/2 hr. to 1 hr. walk with Jenny my german shepard. I get up at 6am drink 2 big glasses of spring H20, review my schedule and look at my goals. This provides me with a daily reminder of which direction I am taking in my life. As I walk I figure out what activities I need to complete that day, and how I am going to get it done. Since I have started doing this in my life I have kept on track, stayed mentally focused, and achieved what I have desired in many aspects of my life. Nightly I plan my meals, and I also keep a food and training journal, this really keep you accountable. Day by day I learn, improve, and streamline my activities. Really if I didn't...plan my workouts... meals... set goals... track my progress... and so on I would be blowing through life and not really getting the most juice out of it. I haven't always been SMART when it comes to life, health, wellness, and training. Its actually been a recent integration into my life, but already I have made so many gains in mulitple areas. Even now when I fall flat on my face when it comes to some aspects, with this daily routine and journal I am able to pick myself up and move forward because I know what works and what doesn't. Whatever your style is, keep it simple, make it a habit, and make yourself accountable by writing it down.
Recently I have had the opportunity to work at newly opened Pure Fitness. This is where I am teaching group classes, workshops, and one on one training sessions. I would be glad to help you create your own path towards your own peak performance!
